Dana Point, CA| June 27, 2024 — Ocean Institute is excited to announce the return of its annual
Stoked on Science (S.O.S.) Teen Conference, a unique opportunity for middle and high school
students passionate about the ocean to dive deep into the world of ocean science. The conference
will take place on Saturday, August 3rd, 2024, from 7:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., offering an immersive
experience both in the lab and at sea aboard the R/V Sea Explorer.
This year's S.O.S. Conference will provide participants with an unparalleled chance to conduct
hands-on research alongside leading scientists, exploring various career pathways in ocean
science. Students will engage in interactive activities that reflect on each scientist's work, gaining
valuable insights into fields such as marine biology, oceanography, marine conservation, and more.
We are thrilled to announce our partnership with the Sahm Naturalist Academy Program (SNAP),
generously funded by the Sahm Family Foundation. This collaboration underscores our shared
commitment to nurturing the next generation of environmental stewards. SNAP provides an indepth
experience in environmental stewardship through an overnight immersive conference
focused on fostering meaningful connections with the natural world. This exceptional opportunity
invites middle school and high school students to spend the entire weekend exploring everything
Ocean Institute has to offer. Activities include a full day around Dana Point Harbor, an overnight
stay at our facility, and participation in the conference the following day. Students will be
immersed in nature through educational stations rooted in scientific methodology and exploration,
inspiring them to appreciate and protect our natural environments.
"We are immensely grateful to the Sahm Family for their longstanding support and dedication to
our mission,” said Dr. Wendy Leavell, President and CEO of Ocean Institute. “Their generosity
enables us to provide transformative experiences for countless young minds, allowing them to
